Default Generator Inspection

Hi to all!

Im trying to check the best pratices available to check generators.

My generator as 6MW and 11kV exit voltage, run by a gas turbine.

Can some help me indicating the pratices available to check the generator? and its periodocity?

Recently it came to my knowledge a machine in the spanish market that cought my attention. it is called EDAIII from unitronics.
http://www.unitronics-electric.com/EDA.html

Check also the attachment, for me, it seems interesting, until the part where they say in page 9 "When EDA test gives evidences of one or more insulation problem, its the time to confirm this issue with 2nd instance techniques".

The advantages seems to be that the machine can be operated by a non-expert guy and if evidences problems are found then it should be used other techniques.

If you guys have time, give it a look and give me your opinion.

Thanks and regards,

Default RE: Generator Inspection

You should set up daily, monthly, semi-annually, and yearly PMs.
Daily would include items such as: oil pressure to bearings, inspect collector for brush arcing, generator pressure if you have any insulating medium, cooling system if its applicable

Montly would include items such as: testing for shaft voltage, H2 purity and dew points, test field ground detectors, etc.

Semi-annual would include: megger field, clean collector, etc.

Yearly or longer PMs should include: Minor and Major insepctions, hI-pot, insulation leakage testing, check bushings and PT/CT, etc.

Most of the routine inspection details are given in the equipment supplier manual. As you have stated your generator is driven by the gas turbine, the inspections may be clubbed with GT inspection schedules. Apart from the routine inspections, it all depends on the unit age, loading of the unit. If it is old its is better to go for the diagnostic like partial discharge monitoring.
