Does anyone have any experience with the GE LM2X AAF intake filter house with respect to any pre-filters prior to the inlet chiller coils?
It appears in the AAF drawings that the only thing upstream of the coils is the trash screens? In areas with trees we would expect that there would be heavy fouling, especially in spring and fall, of the coils without some media to pre-filter the intake combustion air. The installation will be for a new GE LM2500+G4 DLE gas turbine package with the filter house install on the roof of an existing building. Lots of trees surrounding the building the can not be removed (touched). |

Prefilters are good to remove any high pollen areas. The are cheap and easy to install which will increase the life of your base filters. The only issue is that it will slightly increase the differential pressure of your inlet duct which equates to lower efficiency and MW.

Prefilters extends the life of the base (primary) filter by capturing larger particulate, such as seeds, leaves, airborne fibers, etc. They are made of low-cost, relatively low efficiency materials, and are designed to be changed more often than primary filters.

Thanks for the information about prefilters and the penalty of added delta P on the inlet.
However, what I am seeking is: Will it be necessary to modify the vendor (AAF) and the OEM (GE Aeroderivative) Packagers inlet air filter house to install aftermarket prefilters? I hate to have our client purchase a brand new LM2500+G4 DLE CTG package and then have to get up in the intake filter house with cutting torches and welding equipment before we ever push the button to modify the structure downstream of the trash screens and upstream of the chiller coils so that the inlet will accept and retain prefilters. Any experience from owners or operators of this type of equipment would be much appreciated. Prefilters are installed before the filters. The chiller coils and trash screens are downstream of the inlet system on the "clean" side. The inertial separators can be replaced with panel pre-filters for units with chiller or evap coolers. Those without, can use the prefilter wraps on cartridge filters. So to answer your question, NO, modifications to the inlet filter house will not be necessary.
